Regional Resources
New York City's influence is not confined to the five boroughs. It even renders traditional definitions of metropolitan area' inadequate. The Census region, shown in the Map of the Month, now sprawls over four states. To some observers, NYC is the center of a city state' that extends to the limits of commutation and local televison broadcasting; to others it is the hub of a Megalopolis' extending from Boston to Washington. Data collection, map making and analysis must extend across political boundaries. GIS has a regional identity.
